Early yesterday morning, a crazy/scary thing happened…we experienced our very first earthquake in Los Angeles! It occurred a little after six in the morning, so we were jolted out of our sleep by rumbling and shaking. R had crept into our bed in the middle of the night, so she was with us, but V had to race out of bed to grab L from her crib next door. Luckily, it only lasted a few seconds and there weren’t any after-shocks, but WOW! The epicenter was under 5 miles away! We’ve been in L.A. for almost three-and-half years now, and have been anticipating this sort of thing since we moved, but it was a little surreal. In some ways, I’m relieved it happened because now I have a better idea of what to expect, and it gave me that wake up call—literally—to start consolidating emergency items like this in our garage (a necessary task I’ve been avoiding since we switched coasts). Growing up in New Jersey, we never really prepared for earthquakes, but obviously, I better start playing catch up! Incidentally, R was the most brave of any of us, and simply told us to “stay calm” and “duck”—advice she picked up from a video at preschool. How about you? If you’re in L.A., did you feel it too? Scary!
